Shane Clanton, known as the “Georgia Bulldog” of Zebulon, GA., won the 19th Annual Coors Light Fall Classic earned at Whynot Motorsports Park and earning $15000 for the win on the 24-26 October weekend.
Clanton, who started seventh, took the lead from Don O’Neal who was last year’s winner on the 11th lap. Clanton led the rest of the way in the 100 lap event at the one-third mile oval, known for its consistent racy surface just south of Meridian, Mississippi.
O’Neal, who started outside the front row, finished second while eighth-starting Steve Francis was third in Clint Bowyer Racing’s Barry Wright house car. Jeremy Payne of driving the Greenbrier, Ark.-based GRT Race Cars house car, started and finished fourth while Klint Byars of Calhoun City, MS., rounded out the top five.
Neil Baggett of Shannon, MS was the pole sitter, but he was among the early retirees and was listed 22nd in the 24-car field during a chilly weekend.
Clanton raced into the second spot after just five laps, he used the low groove to roll past the high-running O’Neal for a lead.
Clanton’s Kennedy Motorsports Capital Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Core Construction, Keyser Mfg.,Ironco and b3 Architecture + Planning. Clanton stated they had to make numerous changes to the car following the hot laps.
O’Neal was within striking distance of Clanton late in the race, but wasn’t able to make a serious challenge. Clanton cruised to the historic win.
