Talladega (Short Track) Night Up Next for Southern All Star Racing Series

Woodruff, SC -The drivers of the Southern All Star Racing Series will hit the high banks of Talladega Short Track on Saturday night April 25th for the first time this year. The track affectionately known as “The Hornets Nest” always provides plenty of side by side racing action for the Talladega faithful. This weekend while the NASCAR gang is across the street at the big track TST looks to host another big crowd. “The atmosphere at TST is always electric but when you add in all those folks who are there for the Cup race it is really buzzing. And the announcing threesome keeps that crowd into it all night long. Of course the quality of racing alone at Talladega is enough to keep most fans into the program.” said Southern All Star Series Director Kelley Carlton.

Last year in typical Talladega Short Track dramatic fashion, Wendell Wallace made a last lap pass on Tony Knowles to take the $5000 payday. Drivers should expect the usual Talladega Short Track “black ice” surface when the hit the one third mile oval on Saturday night. “TST will host a full show on Friday night as well. Friday night is usually really tacky and hooked up and then Saturday it turns black slick from top to bottom. Both nights will certainly produce the three and four wide racing that everyone is accustomed to at Talladega.” Carlton added. The Southern All Star feature is also scheduled to be one of the first on the track. “We always start a little early and finish up pretty early too. Talladega runs a very tight event.”

Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, fresh off his runner-up finish at Toccoa, Georgia will be looking to wrestle the point lead from current leader and two-time series champion Chris Madden. Madden holds a slim ten point advantage over Hollingsworth after missing the Toccoa event. Also looking to move up in the points is a pair of Cleveland Speedway Driving School Rookie of the Year contenders in Ethan Hunter and Todd Morrow. Hunter had a strong run going at his home track in Toccoa when a spin sent him to the rear of the field. Hunter hopes to rebound from that setback and maintain his lead in the rookie chase. Morrow however expects to be strong at TST having picked up his only series win at the track last fall.

Other drivers expected to be on hand include multi-time series champions Clint Smith and Ronnie Johnson as well as local favorites like Terry Smith, Tim Busha, Ross Martin and Danny Peoples. Both Smith and Johnson have had success at Talladega but Johnson has had a real propensity for the track and its ultra slick surface the last several years. “We usually use one of Wendell Vinson’s spec engines when we run Talladega and his stuff is always really good there when it is slick. And I know it will be especially on Saturday night. We are looking forward to going over there.” Johnson said. Boaz, Alabama’s Busha is riding a wave of momentum into the event having taken the last three weekly super late model feature wins at Talladega.

Talladega Short Track will officially open its pit gates at 1 PM CST however teams can enter throughout the morning as the gates will be open until 12 Noon. The pit gate will be closed from 12 Noon until 1 PM CST. At that time teams and fans already in the pit area will purchase their pit passes. The grandstand gates will open at 3 PM CST. Ticket prices are: Grandstand 10 and older: $20 and under 10 FREE. Pit passes will be $25 each. Southern All Stars Technical Inspection will open at 2 PM CST. And the drivers’ meeting is scheduled for 5:15 PM CST SHARP.
