Spring 2001: The Wing's the Thing
When the rear wing failed on his U.S. Army-backed Top Fueler at nearly 300 mph during qualifying at the NHRA’s recent Memphis Motorsports Park event, Tony Schumacher went for one of the more violent rides in recent memory. Just as he posted a 4.611 secs at 296.44 mph pass in his last attempt of the day, Schumacher’s wing broke away and the car veered almost head on into the right side guardwall, where it broke apart and hurtled the driver compartment up and over the wall.
